Leadership Opportunities

At OHVA students have opportunities to develop as leaders. We are proud to partner with our students to help them succeed in working with others, learning responsibility and challenging themselves for new heights.

Student Council

High school students involved in Student Council have an impact on OHVA students, staff and families.

Purpose: The purpose of student council is to act as a vehicle of communication between students, faculty, surrounding community and school administration.

What does Student Council do?

  • Work with the student body to make OHVA an even better place!
  • Organize Regional Outings (required: 1 in first semester, 1 in second semester)
  • Participate in Service Projects (required: 1 in first semester, 1 in second semester)
  • Promote the dances (November and May in Columbus, OH)!

Interested in joining Student Council?

Send an email to the Student Council Advisor, Mrs. Julie Keaton including the information below:

  • Your first and last name
  • Your grade (9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th)
  • Number of years have you attended OHVA
  • Extra-curricular activity you are involved in (any OHVA club, any K12 national club, any community club, group or organization)
  • County you live in

Would you like to meet some AWESOME people? There are events and activities across the state. Events can be found on the OHVA Event Calendar.

National Honor Society

Founded in 1921, the National Honor Society is one of the oldest student recognition organizations in the U.S.

High school students who are OHVA National Honor Society members maintain a 3.8 GPA or higher and have been chosen by OHVA faculty members based on their grades and the National Honor Society application requirements. We are currently 41 senior members strong with 35 potential junior candidates to be inducted during the fall.

The four main goals of NHS are:

"To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools."

National Honor Society members must complete a minimum of 25 service hours each semester, totaling 50 individual hours for the year. Also, members participate in one “face-to-face” group service project each semester. Fall semester’s project is yet to be determined. The spring project is always an American Red Cross Blood Drive that takes place in areas that include Northwest, Central, Southwest, and Northeast Ohio. We are excited to work with OHVA’s Student Council on these projects this school year!

*New: This year NHS members will be offering peer tutoring services! Information and details on times and place will be coming soon!

National Honor Society Recognizes Students for Distinguished Service, Leadership

The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. Since its inception in 1921, its mission has been to:

  • Create enthusiasm for scholarship
  • Stimulate a desire to render service
  • Promote leadership
  • Develop character in secondary school students

OHVA is proud to be recognized by the National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) for having an outstanding high school and middle school.

OHVA launched a chapter of the NJHS for the middle school in 2008 and currently has 49 members working on service projects and peer tutoring for fellow middle school students in math and reading. The OHVA NHS chapter began in 2010 and currently has 59 members. High school students who are OHVA National Honor Society members maintain a 3.8 GPA or higher and have been approved by OHVA faculty members based on their grades and the National Honor Society application requirements.

The chapters' combined efforts have resulted in:

  • Raising funds annually for The Red Cross by hosting a group blood-drive
  • Peer mentoring programs for middle school and high school students
  • Collections for local food banks and humane societies
  • Ongoing plans for new volunteer opportunities in 2015

Membership in OHVA NHS

OHVA celebrated its annual NHS induction ceremony in December of 2014 and inducts students in NJHS in the spring of each year. New officers including president, vice president, secretary and treasurer are also named during the induction ceremonies.

Becoming a member of the OHVA NHS is an honor and is based on the criteria of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Students must have a sophomore, junior, or senior status and have completed at least one semester at OHVA in good standing with a minimum GPA of 3.8.

Once a candidate is voted into the NHS, he or she must attend monthly meetings, maintain a GPA of 3.8 or higher, uphold all school rules and complete a minimum of 25 service hours each semester including one "face-to-face" group project.
